One of the things frequent travelers to Rocky Point enjoy most is finding local eateries. There is no shortage of locals who have set up their homes as outdoor restaurants. Some welcome you onto their driveways and front yards. Others set up carts outside popular shopping areas.

The Sonoran hotdog is a late-night staple of northwestern Mexico. You can find Sonoran dog vendors throughout Arizona as well! Sonoran hotdogs are bacon-wrapped, topped with onions (cebollas), salsa, tomatoes, and various sauces.

The most common place to find Sonoran hotdog vendors is outside of bars late at night. However, when you have a craving for one during the day, look no further than Chon’s Sonoran Hotdogs!

Chon sells 200-700 Sonoran hotdogs a day!

Chon’s Sonoran Hotdogs is a short drive into town from Sandy Beach. It is just south of the main road from Sandy Beach, calle no reelección. Chon sells Sonoran hotdogs until he runs out, usually by about 2 pm. Chon tells me he sells 200-700 hotdogs a day!

A woman takes payment and cleans the tables. I ask if they are married, and Chon says “no, she has to pay me.” His wife laughs and slaps his arm playfully. They have worked side-by-side for many years.

There are a few tables set up in front of their home and in the driveway. Many locals order dozens of hotdogs to go. While my husband and I sit enjoying our Sonoran hotdogs, Chon grills non-stop. He sells over 20 hotdogs in the ten minutes we are there!

Altogether, my husband and I have 5 hotdogs and a bottle of Coca-Cola. Total cost: 150 MX (pesos), or about $8 USD at the current exchange rate. A great deal for a fantastic meal and friendly service!

If hotdogs aren’t your thing, try Pollo Lucas for amazing mesquite-grilled chicken.
